We've heard those stories of spiders being found in imported grapes, but this one is new to me.
A woman in Brooklyn, NY was startled when a frog jumped out of her organic lettuce. That's right, not only was there a frog in a head of lettuce the woman bought at the Park Slope Food Coop, it was actually alive, surviving the trip from Florida to New York.
As you can see from the pic, it wasn't a big frog like you'd find in a swamp or lake, but still, must have been freaky.
The other day I was all set to make mashed potatoes -- I'd even peeled the cooked potatoes and placed them in my big bowl, when I realized that I couldn't find my masher! With a little bit of innovation, clumpless potatoes were only moments away.

omg! about 5 years ago i we found one in the og lettuce at work( i worked for wild oats) one of the girls was going to reklease it, but i was took him/her home and kept it in a latrge terrarium. it was so cool and he lived for about 2 years there, un til he got out and died..... i never thought i'd hear the same story. too cool

That's great, actually. She should get a small terrarium and enjoy her new pet.
Truly, I can't believe this would surprise anyone. With an upsurge in the demand for foods that are not commercially processed, this kind of thing will become more and more common. There's nothing freaky or unusual about the idea of a small creature residing/hiding in a plant.

That is soooo cute!! =)I would keep him to. The only thing is that these types of incodents will happen more and more with humans taking over the animals habitats. =(

Just thought I'd let you know it's happened here in Australia too. I used to work in Safeway and a friend/co-worker who worked in produce also found a frog in the lettuce. She kept it, and it's still living now, nice and large in her house.

I used to work at a grocery store, and we'd find snails in the mustard greens, frogs in the lettuce, strange bugs in the banana boxes, all sorts of crazy things.
I think it'd probably startle me, but thats a really cute frog. I'd get over it and give him a home!

There's a frog (Scinax rubra) which is known as the 'banana frog' because it is so commonly found in imported bananas.

I live in Florida and during certain parts of the year those little frogs get in everywhere. It's the worst when they get in the door jambs and you hear a squishy-crunch sound when you shut the door. I'll take a live frog jumping out of my salad over a dead frog oozing out of my door jamb any day.

I am from FL and I will take lil frogs, HUGE Buffo Frogs and lizards anyday over the local flying PALMETTO ROACHES , Talk about a crunch! Gross.They fly out of closets , cabinets , anywhere and get one in your HAIR! UGGGH!

Well, FOR SURE, she does not have any chemicals in her lettuce! At least it was not a black widow which I have seen people get around here. Every time I go to the Nature Center, there is a bucket with a black widow in it-found on produce from a grocery. Scary! At least if I found a frog, I'd figure it ate the spider!
