It's common knowledge that dogs will, er, dog just about anything. I've never had a dog and I am by no means a "dog person," but I hear that they're known to feast indiscriminately upon table scraps. In my limited exposure to dogs, I've known canines with particular affections for people food. I once lived with a woman whose boxer had such an appetite for bread from Italian restaurants that we would always save her a doggie bag from the bread basket. I liked to refer to her as "pure-bread."
And I've had the pleasure of meeting Jeffrey Steingarten's golden retriever, Sky King, who is reported to have a discriminating palate when it comes to all things barbecue.
But I've never even conceived of canines craving vegetables until a friend sent me this snap of a dog chowing down on cukes at his master's farm in Japan. In case you're wondering, it's not a case of the dog chasing after green bones, he really does enjoy cucumbers. Does anyone else know of dogs that dig farm-fresh produce?

My dog LOVES watermelon. He will also beg for the hulls off of muscadine grapes, which my father shares with him every year.

I know a lot of dogs who love carrots, either cooked or raw. My dog on the other hand will do anything for mango. He once stole one from the counter and we found a clean pit hidden in the laundry basket. He also loves papaya and honeydew, but mango is his favourite food, by far.

I have 3 dogs and they all seem to have their own particular likes and dislikes for vegetables and fruits. One dog loves carrots ... all of them love green beans ... 2 of the 3 love oranges ... but all 3 seem to hate celery. They take on sniff and just walk away.

My dog loves carrots. I started giving them to him as treats when he was just a puppy. He's not to keen on many other veggies though.

Our dog loves any food we get him excited about.
He does have a particular taste for fruits and bread, but he'll eat cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, etc. Really, anything he can get his mouth around.
He really loves bread, grapes, oranges, and apple and pear cores (and the rest of them, but he gobbles the cores).

My dog LOVES carrots. And grapes. (And I know you're not supposed to give your dog grapes, so I don't give her many and she's never shown any adverse effects)

When our vet informed us that our dog was getting a little on the chunky side, he had us cut back considerably on the dog food. When I appealed to our vet a bit later that our boy had that lean and hungry look, he said we could add vegetables to his diet to fill him up more. So each day he gets either a helping of green beans or carrots and he LOVES them!

My old dog LOVED her cookies, but we discovered she loved baby carrots even more. It got to the point that we'd offer her both and she'd choose the carrot every time...and then come back to see if the cookie was still available. :)

Our beagle used to stand up on his hind legs in order to pluck the figs off the lower branches of our fig tree. He also loves crunchy things -- carrots, apple slices, the ribs from greens like romaine lettuce.

My rott, Luke will steal raw potatos from the bag if you leave it unattended. And now that he has a potbellied pig for a sister, they share bags and bags salad mix from my mom's restaurant that's unservable.

My girlfriend and I left our labrador retriever Maggie in the truck with the groceries one time. When we returned we looked with dismay at each other, just knowing that everything would be strewn about and picked over.
What had actually happened, though, was that Maggie had very carefully dug down into the supermarket bag, and had even picked out and put aside a couple of packages of cold cuts, to get to the bananas. She had eaten a single banana from a bunch of four, skin and all, and had left everything else alone.
(And lest you think that we just THOUGHT there were four bananas, no: I found the, er, evidence in the back yard the next day.)
Ever since then, we bought her a banana whenever we went to the grocery store. Happy dog.
She died in 2003 a few days after her 13th birthday. RIP, Maggie.
(Oh, she leapt pretty high for carrots, too.)

Oh, I had a Siberian Husky who not only loved veggies, particularly cauliflower (like crack to him, he responded as soon as he heard the knife hit the cutting board), but the dang dog was also allergic to meat! Apparently this is not unusual for the breed--they originated in colder climates where fish and berries are more available than cattle and are closer to their wolf cousins who also are herbivores as well as carnivores. He also spoke highly of beer.

I've had dogs that hated vegetables and dogs that loved them. We had to keep the garden gate latched shut with one dog, because she'd eat all the asparagus spears. I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me, with my childhood hatred of asparagus, to sneak her in.

I have a blue heeler who loves all fruits and veggies! His favorites seem to be carrots and plums but we haven't found any that he won't eat. In fact a couple weeks ago while we were at church our neighbor brought me a vase with some flowers that she had grown & a bowl of cherry tomatoes. When we got home I found the vase of beautiful flowers tipped over and an empty bowl on my front porch, it wasn't until I thanked her for the flowers that she asked me how I liked the tomatoes that I realized that Rudy had eaten all the tomatoes before we got home!

our dog loves corn on the cob and will eat it like we do- round and round with her front teeth and then eat the cleaned-off cobb. it's hilarious! she likes a lot of veggies, but hates green beans. if you offer her one, she will politely take it and then walk into the next room and hide it under the dining room table. sneaky little devil.

My two Dauchunds will beg for anything that comes from a human plate. When I make a salad, they'll beg for veg-- especially carrots and brocolli. Once a bag of carrots were left unattended on my counter and were confiscated by my pups. Maybe it's the crunch of the veggies that they like so much!
As far as fruit goes: During the early summer when blueberries are freshly picked, they'll beg for fresh blueberries-- my 2 year old female especially. They'll also eat banana and watermelon.
