I find this picture, posted by Stef, slightly creepy and yet totally fascinating, all at the same time. I know that it's tradition to bake trinkets into the King Cake, so it's not quite as strange as it could be, but it's still a little nutty to see a plastic baby climbing out of a cupcake. I think the greenish color spots are more off-putting than the baby. Appetite aside though, it's a cool picture.
(Yes, I know the green is part of the deal, but still. Ick.)

I guess it looks kind of odd if you don't grow up with the tradition.
Since I grew up with the Rosca de Reyes (king's cake in Spanish) having a baby in it I never gave it a second thought until now that you've pointed it out.
...the tradition that to me was sort of odd was when I found out that some of my European friends wrap every day coins instead of having the plastic baby!
I mean, the baby is clean, freshly purchased, comes inside a packet...the coin, even if it's washed, it's been everywhere!
Thanks for pointing out the recipe, at work, those of us that celebrate the Magi, are exchanging Rosca experiences and recipes. I'll send them this way on Monday!
