I've been to movie theaters with upscale food before. The Landmark theater near my house serves fancy cheesecakes and local beer. However, here's one that is new to me - movie theater seats with a button to call a waiter.
Village Road Show Gold Class Cinemas is set to open 50 theaters in the US in the next 5 years. Tickets to see movies at these theaters will cost $35 - no food included. However, for your big bucks, you will get the privilege of lounging in a comfortable recliner, pressing a button, and having someone serve you made-to-order meals (including sushi).
I wonder if the waiters will serve during the movie or only before. A waiter standing in front of me as the Titanic sinks sounds worse than that tall guy with the big head who always sits in front of me.
Would you pay $35 for the gold class movie experience?

It's spendy, but for an interesting treat... I'd give it a try. Seems kinda fun.
We RARELY go to the theaters, usually only for big things like Lord of the Rings. So what's already an event to us would just become an EVENT.

5 years ago, a movie ticket in the Baltimore area was $7. There's $10-$12, now. The idea of paying $70 for a pair of movie ticets seems insane, but if it's done right, I'd be willing to think about it. I'd expect you to have to be dressed the part, the theatre to be kept *really* clean, and the food to be good.
Basically, if I'm paying that much for a ticket, I don't want some ghetto chick in a Tweety Bird shirt yelling into her cell phone two rows down. I want a little class. I'm being a judgemental prick, and I'm OK with that.

I would consider it because $35 a pop means no obnoxious teenagers, and certainly no crying babies.

We have theaters like this too here in Milwaukee. The ticket is average priced. You order food at the window and then take a number and the waitress brings it out to you. I wouldn't pay $35 a ticket for this if it doesn't include the food too.

Here's a brilliant idea. Spend $1000 for a projector and another $1000 for a decent speaker setup and make your own gourmet food that is bound to be better than any over-priced sushi or baked chicken at a 'luxury' (read: rip-off) movie theater.
Anyone snooty enough to pay $35 for a public movie theater should be able to afford their own private one.

There used to be a theater in Indianapolis called The Hollywood Bar & Grill, where you'd sit at rows of tables & chairs instead of theater seats. Waiters would come by before the show started and during an intermission. It was so much fun...though not $35!

I've been to one of these Village Gold theaters in Australia. A pretty nice experience -- giant cuhsy lounge chairs you could fall asleep in, and only a few dozen seats in the theater. You order your food and drinks in the lobby before the film and they serve it during the coming attractions so it doesn't interfere with the movie. It was A$18 for a weekday matinee.

We already have something like this in Wichita, KS. Yes, you read it right. Kansas. The tickets are only twice as much as regular tickets and you have to be 21 years or older to sit up there. And the seats they have a giant love seat styled sofas. It's definately a treat if you are going to see a movie you have been looking forward to. We have had this theatre by a local company for over 5 years now, so this is a little behind the times to me.

I would do this if it were a $35 minimum in ordering drinks and food, but not as a baseline ticket price. If a cushy seat and wait service is all you get, I'll stay home with a DVD and pause it when I need to fix a drink or a snack.

Here in Costa Rica, we already have these theaters... the recliners are big and plush and very comfortable, and the waiters will serve you anything from the full menu, which ranges from caramel corn and soda to sushi, baked chicken, etc. The food prices are very reasonable - a large caramel corn & 2 large sodas cost about $6, and the tickets are, too, at $8 each. But for $35, plus the marked up price of U.S. movie snacks?? I say no.
Regarding the waiters... they're really not a problem. At least here, the VIP theaters are smaller, and with far fewer seats. The rows are spaced out very nicely, and the stadium aspect is pretty severe, so when the waiter comes to take an order, all he need do is crouch down a little and the row behind won't ever have their view obstructed.
